Over the years, I’ve been a choir director, arranger, teacher, workshop presenter, publisher, singer. Recently, I even started working on a podcast. That one’s super new, not even launched yet, but it’s in the works. I was doing all these things already, just scattered everywhere. One day, I thought why not put everything together? Make one home for all the music, ideas, and stories I’ve been sharing in bits and pieces.
Gerald Tan Music is that home.
It’s where I’ll share things I’ve learned (and am still learning) about teaching choirs, arranging music that singers actually enjoy singing, building inclusive spaces, and preserving Southeast Asian voices and music in the choral form. Some posts might be useful for music educators, others maybe for students, or composers… or just those who like to kaypoh behind the scenes.
I feel it is also a way to stay grounded. In our line of work, everything moves so fast, it can feel a bit fleeting. Rehearsals, deadlines, performances, new scores. Sometimes we forget to pause and reflect. Writing helps me do that. So think of this blog like a kopi chat. Less lecture, more “eh, let’s think about this together.”
Whether you’re here to read, reflect, or just browse and go, welcome. Hope you find something here that sings to you.
